However, on close examination, it is apparent that Gandhi was not opposed to machines, technology, wealth, or any other single component of “civilization,” or even all of these factors taken together. What he opposed, as Dr. Iyer points out, was “ruthless mechanization, the Midas-complex and power-mania.”[1] Gandhi feared India would become seduced by transplanted economic exploitation, or worse, debilitating material comforts.
