Augustine’s take on sex has also left a deep mark on our civilization. He, more than anyone else, was responsible for the idea that sex is inherently evil. He called it the most visible indication of man’s fallen state. As scholar Elaine Pagels puts it, he saw sexual desire as the “proof” of and “penalty” for original sin.[1]
